Professor Morone discussed his book Hellfire Nation: The Politics of Sin in American History, published by Yale University Press. According to Professor Morone, although the Constitution separates church and state, religion has always infused American politics. He said, however, that religious zeal has been America’s weak spot, pointing out that while morality inspired abolition, women’s suffrage, and civil rights, it conversely produced the Salem witch trials, slavery, and Prohibition. Furthermore, moral arguments influence everything from abortion debate to foreign policy to scientific research. The book traces the religious and moral roots of American history, from the colonial past to the present day. Following his presentation, Professor Morone answered questions from members of the audience. close
