Ms. Lawlor talked with children about her young person’s biography, Helen Keller: Rebellious Spirit, published by Holiday House. The book describes the life of Helen Keller, who lost her sight and hearing when she was nineteen months old, and how she learned to read and write in 1887 when she was seven years old. The author talked about Helen’s personality, her family, her struggles, and her fame. In a presentation for the students, Ms. Lawlor exhibited photographs of Helen at different stages of her life and an example of her early writing. She answered audience questions. Ms. Sorge, an instructor at the Hadley School for the Blind, explained the Braille alphabet to students and talked about the experience of being blind.
