The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution heard testimony on the issue of hate crimes. Witnesses spoke on behalf of a bill which requires the Justice Department to keep statistics on crimes motivated by racial, religious, or ethnic prejudice. Representative Barbara Kennelly (D-Connecticut), Representative John Conyers (D-Michigan) and various civil liberties advocates testified in support of data collection, citing the value it lends to understanding and combatting the problem of hate crimes. close
