It was the first full-scale battle between U.S. troops and the People’s Army of Vietnam, and soon after these battles the Vietnamese communist forces began engaging in guerrilla warfare. Then Lieutenant Colonel Moore was the commanding officer on the ground with the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment. He reflected on the nature of war and leadership, and shared recollections of the battle that he knew would reverberate in Washington, D.C., and Hanoi.
He was interviewed by Richard Verrone on November 10, 2005, while in Washington, D.C., at a 40th anniversary reunion for veterans of the battle of the Ia Drang Valley.
