Mr. Harkin, Iowa’s junior senator, was born in 1939 in Cumming, Iowa. He received his undergraduate degree from Iowa State University in 1962 and began service in the armed forces. He graduated from the Catholic University School of Law in 1972. During the trip back to his home state, Mr. Harkin toured the Golden Circle Business Center. He spoke first with the founders of the Laramy-K Optics Corporation, who explained to him the importance of the center in helping to start small business projects like their own in the state of Iowa. Mr. Harkin also visited the production facility for the creation of pasta chips and walked through the process of making homemade pasta. As a part of his tour, Senator Harkin met with business owners for an informal luncheon. He discussed the importance of “work days"--his plans to shadow workers in various occupations to learn more about their careers and.
