President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously to Army First Lieutenant Alonzo H. Cushing for his actions during the U.S. Civil War. First Lieutenant Cushing was commanding officer of Battery A, 4th United States Artillery, Artillery Brigade, 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac during combat operations in the vicinity of Cemetery Ridge, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 3, 1863. During Pickett’s Charge, he manned the only serviceable artillery piece remaining, making it possible for the Union Army to repel the Confederate attack. He was shot and killed during the fight.

First Lieutenant Cushing’s cousins, Frederic Stevens Sater and Frederic Cushing Stevens III, and families were in attendance. close
