Descendants of early civil rights leaders talked about the legacy of their forebears. A video, provided courtesy of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, was shown on the Maya Angelo Public Charter School in Washington, D.C., which focuses on children who have not succeeded in traditional schools. Following the video, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. Ms. Sirmans, civil rights attorney and alum of the University of Rochester, moderated the panel.

Participating in the panel were Donzaleigh Abernathy, daughter of Ralph Abernathy; Adam Clayton Powell III, grandson of Adam Clayton Powell Sr., the most powerful African American churchman of his time and son of Adam Clayton Powell Jr.; James Forman Jr. son of James Forman Sr., the civil rights leader and founder of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC); and A’Lelia Bundles great-great-granddaughter of Madam C.J. Walker. close
