Former Senator Gravel announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic nomination for president of the U.S. Among the issues he identified as part of his campaign were campaign finance, reforming the corrupting influence of special interests in the political process, implementation of a fair tax based on elimination of income taxes, universal health care, religious diversity, and the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. He also proposed a Constitutional Amendment to remove the power to declare war from Congress. He was the first to formally announce his candidacy and answered questions from reporters following his announcement. close
