Senator Moynihan, who headed the congressional Commission on Protecting and Reducing Government Secrecy spoke to students at Georgetown University the day before the commission released its final report. The commission found that a “culture of secrecy” pervades the federal government, depriving the public and even policy-makers of vital information. He said that classification, a hold-over from the Cold War, should be kept to an absolute minimum. He began with the secrecy surrounding President Kennedy’s assassination and the Iran/Contra scandal among others. After his remarks, he took questions from the audience. close
