Witnesses testified about efforts by Somalia, the U.S., and the international community to eliminate terrorist threats to Somalia’s security, such as the al-Qaida affiliated al-Shabaab. The previous weekend U.S. Special Forces carried out raids in Libya and Somalia targeting Islamist militants. The U.S. captured a senior al-Qaida leader in Libya but had to withdraw its forces in a raid on the southern Somali hideout of al-Shabaab, the group behind the attack on a shopping mall in Kenya the previous month. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) criticized the raid in Somalia as an “intelligence failure.” Topics included the tension in Somalia over setting up a stable federal government based a strong central government. close
