Xinran Xue discussed her book The Good Women of China: Hidden Voices, published by Pantheon Books. Through her daily radio program, Xinran invited women across China to call in and talk about themselves. After centuries of obedience to their fathers, husbands and sons followed by years of fear under Communism, the women were reluctant to talk openly about their feelings until Xinran won their trust. The narratives included in the book -- stories of forced marriages, sexual abuse, separation of parents from their children, and extreme poverty -- relate what it means to be a woman in modern China. After her presentation, the author answered questions from members of the audience. close
