Participants debated the pros and cons of the World Trade Organization. Proponents of the WTO argued that membership benefited the economy, could further democratic institutions in developing countries through regulation, and that WTO rules and regulations provided sufficient protections for consumers, workers and the environment. Opponents argued that the WTO was beholden to corporate interests and brokered agreements which did not provide sufficient protections for workers, provided lower standards of environmental protection, and created great disparities in wealth. Following opening arguments they responded to questions from the moderator. close
