Banking Committee chairman Representative Jim Leach, R-Iowa, talked about the coming global financial services market and the steps Congress should take to keep the U.S. competitive. He noted that the new high-tech world of international finance must be understood, as well as the current “merger mania.” He also cautioned that the Asian “financial contagion” will affect even a strong economy like the U.S., particularly in the coastal states and Midwestern agriculture. After his prepared remarks, Rep. Leach took questions from the audience. close
