Speaking as president of Green Cross International, Mikhail Gorbachev discussed environmental issues five years after the Rio Earth Summit. He pointed out that technology-centered societies still are clashing with the needs of nature. He said that the concept of “man over nature” has resulted in environmental crises in many countries and that people must learn to live in harmony with nature. Mr. Gorbachev was presented with the George Washington University President’s Medal for his part in ending the Cold War. Following his prepared remarks, Mr. Gorbachev took questions from the audience. Translation into English was by translator. close
