Francis Collins talked about the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act and the public policy implications of expanding use of genetic information. On Thursday, April 24, 2008, the Senate passed the GINA (HR 493) by a vote of 95 to 0. The bill, slated to be on the House floor the next week, prohibits discrimination on the basis of genetic information with respect to health insurance and employment. Topiocs included the uses of genetic testing, how it is different from other medical tests, and the need for further regulation. After Dr. Collins left, the reporters discussed his responses with the host. close
