Defense Secretary Robert Gates talked about national defense and the Obama administration’s proposed $680 billion defense budget. In his remarks he spoke of the need for versatility and changes to entrenched defense habits and procedures, and proposed cutting funds for the F-22 fighter while increasing funds for unmanned aircraft and other resources such as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. He criticized the F-22 program in particular, saying it was a perfect illustration of what was wrong with the way the U.S. spends money building expensive weapons with limited use rather than cheaper systems that U.S. forces could employ in a variety of situations. He added that the F-22 program might make the U.S. more vulnerable. close
