President Bill Clinton announced that garment industry, union, human rights organization and religious group representatives had reached an agreement on a code of employment at garment factories around the world. The voluntary agreement set minimum working ages and wages and maximum hours of work. It also provided monitoring of factories and consumer information about clothing produced under the standards. Jay Mazur, president of the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees, Linda Goldner, president of the National Consumers League, and Paul Charron, CEO of Liz Claiborne, also addressed the audience gathered in the East Room of the White House. close
