William Galston talked about the philosophy of the tea party movement, and he responded to telephone calls and electronic communications. He argued that the attitudes of those in the movement reflect those of former President Andrew Jackson: “suspicious of federal power” and “aroused, angry and above all fearful, in full revolt against a new elite.” He discussed how those outlooks were seen during the government shutdown, the influence of Senator Ted Cruz, and how much influence the movement could have over future policy debates.
