New Story Leadership for the Middle East fellowship program alumni talked about growing up in Israel, South Africa, and Northern Ireland. Nitzan Regev-Sanders, a Jewish Israeli, talked about her childhood in which she was pushed to study hard to get into a good unit to protect Israel, rather than encouraged to pursue social activities. Yara Owayyed, an Israeli-Palestinian, detailed her experiences with discrimination, which included her hair being burned as a child in school and the Israeli government appropriating her home. Rikus Wessels and John Callaghan related their respective experiences growing up in South Africa and Northern Ireland to those of Ms. Regev-Sanders and Ms. Owayyed. Panelists answered questions at the end of the program. close
