Participants discussed the state of political relations between the United States and China and the challenges facing the two countries in the next century. They talked about the “one China” policy, its' nuclear weapons program, and its' rise as an economic power in Asia. They advocated firm treatment of China and continued support of Taiwan, but also recommended that the current policy of engagement continue and that future administrations keep pressuring China on human rights reform. Following their remarks they answered questions from the audience. close
