Professor Ayers talked about the creation and distribution of knowledge in today’s digital environment. Edward L. Ayers, dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia, was the author (with Anne S. Rubin) of The Valley of the Shadow: Two Communities in the American Civil War - The Eve of War, published by W.W. Norton and Company. The book was a ground-level view of the Civil War through the innovative use of book, CD-ROM, and the World Wide Web. It explored Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and Augusta County, Virginia. He spoke about his experiences publishing a history book online, and talked about the possibilities the Internet offers educators and writers in the field of scholarship.
