In response to a dispute between factions of the Reform Party over the status of their presidential nominee, the Federal Election Commission discussed how $12.5 million in federal campaign funds would be distributed to the Reform Party. They determined by a 5 to 1 vote that the funds should go to Pat Buchanan, thus recognizing him as the legitimate nominee. Commissioners in the majority looked at the extent of support for each candidate in state parties and said they did not want to interfere with internal party politics. Commissioner Sandstrom dissented saying the decision was hasty and should be left to the courts. close
