The subcommittee heard testimony on the status of research into fuel efficient automobiles by U.S. and Japanese automobile designers and manufacturers. The subcommittee also heard testimony on the proper actions to be taken by the government and private manufacturers in the production of fuel efficient cars. Witnesses included representatives of consumer organizations who testified on safety and economical concerns of automobile buyers. Issues raised during the hearing included safety issues in automobile engineering and performance balanced against fuel economy. close
