Damani Davis talked about the history of the Freedman’s Savings Bank and the relevant documents housed at the archives.

Incorporated by Congress on March 3, 1865, the Freedman’s Savings and Trust Company, also known as the Freedman’s Savings Bank, was created to spur the economic development of the newly-emancipated African American population in the post-Civil War era. Despite significant financial contributions from figures such as Frederick Douglass, the bank failed in 1874, leaving tens of thousands of depositors in financial ruin. close
