President Bill Clinton spoke to a conference on political reform. He stated that the controversies over campaign financing in the 1996 election must be a spur to congressional action on this issue. He also argued that free television time could reduce the influence of money on politics since candidates need large sums of money to buy expensive air time. Before the president spoke, Walter Cronkite urged broadcasters to serve the public interest by agreeing to provide free television time to political candidates. close
