Forty years after the first full scale engagement between U.S. troops and the People’s Army of Vietnam, the Vietnam Archive interviewed veterans from the Battles of the Ia Drang Valley. It was after these battles - waged in November 1965 - that North Vietnamese forces began engaging in guerrilla warfare.

Up next - and airing for the first time on television - excerpts from one of those oral histories. We’ll hear from Lieutenant Colonel George Forrest who was the commanding officer in the 1st battalion, 5th cavalry which came in to support the 7th cavalry after the third day of the battle.
