Senator Lisa Murkowski spoke at the Center for Oceans Law and Policy conference. In her remarks she said she continues to support offshore oil drilling in Alaska’s North Slope, despite the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. She urged Congress to support the Law of the Sea Convention treaty, which places jurisdiction limits on the oceans nations may claim.

The Law of the Sea Treaty, adopted in 1982 but still not ratified, calls for technology transfers and wealth transfers from developed to undeveloped nations. It also requires parties to the treaty to adopt regulations and laws to control pollution of the marine environment. The treaty establishes specific jurisdictional limits on the ocean area that countries may claim, including a 12-mile territorial sea limit and a 200-mile exclusive economic zone limit. close
