A memorial service was held for the 40 passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93 which crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after being hijacked during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Starting at the time of the 10:03 a.m. crash the names of the passengers and crew members were read and Bells of Remembrance were rung. Speakers included Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and Pennsylvania congressional members. This was the first time a remembrance ceremony was held at the visitor center that opened the previous year.

The flight was heading from Newark, New Jersey, to San Francisco when it crashed after passengers and crew fought terrorists for control of the plane widely believed to be heading to Washington, D.C. close
