Witnesses testified about a $8,000 dollar tax credit for first-time home buyers, which Congress is considering extending beyond the end of the current year. A report by the inspector general overseeing IRS operations said as many as 100,000 people (costing about $500 million) may have claimed the credit fraudulently. Witnesses focused on abuses of the credit, proposed legislative changes, and controls to ensure accuracy of claims. close
