A hearing examined the inadequacies among a number of key services to the public at Social Security Administration (SSA) field offices resulting from reductions in staff and growth in workloads. The deficiencies include difficulty in reaching many field offices by telephone, long waiting times for walk-in customers, and decreased Social Security trust fund balances and increased Federal budget deficits resulting from fewer periodic eligibility reviews of Social Security beneficiaries. close
