Mr. Honigsbaum discussed his book The Fever Trail: In Search of the Cure for Malaria, published by Farr, Strauss, and Giroux. The book follows the adventures of three 19th-century English naturalists and their search for antidote for Malaria called quinine. The only source of quinine is from the bark of the Cinchona tree, which grows in the jungles of South America. Ultimately the cure proved to be a temporary fix for the disease that killed 2 million people in the 1800's. Mr. Honigsbaum also discussed the current global effects of Malaria, and the ongoing search for a vaccine. He answered questions following his talk. close
