Former congressional leaders and cabinet officials talked about problems with and ways to reform the budget process. David Obey said that members of Congress should spend more time in Washington learning about the substance of issues rather than focusing on politics and campaign fundraising. Kent Conrad said that leaders were willing to solve problems on a short-term basis rather than compromising on long-term solutions. Don Nickles criticized President Obama for a lack of leadership and disinterest in debt. Other topics included sequestration as called for in the Budget Control Act of 2011. Following the discussion, panelists took questions from the audience.
