Republican and Democratic staff members on the House Budget Committee debated the prospects of government shutdown and a short-term resolution on the continuing resolution to fund the federal government through the remainder of fiscal year 2011. They agreed that a compromise would be reached by the March 4, 2011, deadline; however, Maya MacGuiness from the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget predicted that Republicans and Democrats would not reach a compromise in time to avoid a shutdown.
