Randi Weingarten spoke with reporters at the Christian Science Monitor breakfast at the St. Regis Hotel. In remarks, she responded to just-released results of the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in which the U.S. failed to score in the top 20 in math, reading, or science, with the top scores going to Asian countries including China, South Korea, and Japan. Ms. Weingarten provided recommendations for improving public education and outlined her American Federation of Teachers organization’s launch of its “Reclaim the Promise of Public Education” campaign promoting public education nationwide. Other topics included retirement security, the bankruptcy of Detroit, teacher labor unions, and implementation of Common Core education standards. close
