The House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on International Economic Policy & Trade heard testimony on U.S. trade with Iraq before the Persian Gulf war. The subcommittee chairman Representative Sam Gejdenson stated that between 1985 and 1990, the U.S. approved licenses for the exporting by U.S. companies to Iraq of over $1.5 billion in materials that could be used in the manufacture of armaments for Iraq. The committee sought to determine if the U.S. export control system functioned properly during the late 1980s. close
