Assistant Professor Steele delivered a speech sponsored by the Woodrow Wilson Center on the use of experts in television journalism. After showing a short videotape of pundit Andy Rooney satirizing the use of experts in television news, Ms. Steele presented her analysis of the use of experts by television news programs during the Persian Gulf war. Her analysis focused on the attempt for objectivity by television news programs that in fact masked rather than revealed “truth” in news coverage. Ms. Steele showed videotapes of television news programs from the Persian Gulf war at various times during her presentation. Ms. Steele and Mr. Rosen responded to questions from the audience following the presentation. close
