On National Teacher’s Day, the National Education Association released its annual report on teachers' salaries across the nation. Also included in the report are school enrollment and financial data. Mr. Geiger announced the report found education reform to be at risk as the recession continues. The Federal government continues to pay for less and less of public schools' expenses; the current percentage, 6.2 percent, is the lowest fraction of Federal financial input to schools since 1965. Many education programs, like many social programs, are being delegated to state and local management, who often do not have the financial wherewithal to adequately finance them. The implications of the statistics are: fewer highly qualified prospective teachers will be attracted to the field, and fewer educational resources will be available to students. close
