Eric Klinenberg talked about his book, Fighting for Air: The Battle to Control America’s Media, published by Metropolitan Books. The guest interviewer was Ben Scott. Mr. Klinenberg explained the control of local media by companies such as Clear Channel, Sinclair Broadcasting, and the Tribune Company. Media conglomerates sometimes own radio, television and newspaper outlets in a local area. He related an example of this situation resulting in no local news reporting of a dangerous situation. Other topics included the Federal Communications Commission and deregulation, the role of the Internet, and the increasing control of the Internet by telephone and cable companies.
Eric Klinenberg is an associate professor of sociology at New York University and the author of Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago, published by University of Chicago Press, about the 1995 heat wave that took the lives of over 700 people in Chicago. His work has appeared in the Washington Post, The Nation, and Rolling Stone.
Ben Scott is the policy director for Free Press, an organization that promotes media reform. He is the co-editor of The Future of Media: Resistance and Reform in the 21st Century, published by Seven Stories Press.
