Professor Andrew Burstein talked about the Enlightenment era in America and the ideas that shaped the politics and morals of the Revolutionary generation. He spoke about Benjamin Franklin’s writings and his community ventures, such as the Library Company of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Gazette, to show how these endeavors were in line with the humanist ideals of the time. He also argued that the Great Awakening, a religious movement of the 1730s and 1740s, was in conflict with the Enlightenment’s emphasis on scientific thinking. close
