Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Mike Leavitt talked about environmental progress in the country. He said that the easy steps have already been taken and that now incremental improvements will only be made possible by science and technology. He emphasized the relationship between a healthy environment and economic prosperity. He spoke about planned regulation of diesel fuel and mercury and that the next day he would declare the non-attainment zones for the new air pollution regulations. He cited Early Action Compacts as examples of collaborative, incentive-driven, results-oriented solutions that will speed progress and that exemplify his “in libra” philosophy of balance and stewardship, emphasizing collaboration and local decision-making. After his remarks he responded to questions submitted by the audience and electronic mail. close
