Many slaves helped build the U.S. Capitol, including Philip Reid, who supervised the casting of the bronze statue which stands on the Capitol dome. Recently, House and Senate leaders reflected on the contributions of these slaves at a ceremony dedicating a marker in their honor in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner and Democratic Congressman John Lewis of Georgia are among the members of Congress who spoke.
