Senators heard testimony on the security of the U.S.-Canadian border. Border security has come under scrutiny following a series of attempted crossings by suspected terrorists in the past. The U.S. senators from Washington state testified about the need for more staffing along the Canadian border. A suspected terrorist allegedly brought bomb-making materials into the U.S. in December 1999 at Port Angeles, Washington and Inspector Dean described his apprehension there. Commissioners Winwood and Pearson described the difficulties of staffing all border crossings. Union representatives of U.S. Customs employees criticized the Immigration and Naturalization Service for inadequate staffing and failure to provide equipment along the northern border, reducing the ability of officers to control illegal immigration.
