The opening session began with a video on the creation of the Department of Energy by President Carter in 1977. Other topics covered by session speakers included the need for more technology; diversification of energy supplies, including solar, wind, and nuclear power; and partnerships and collaborations between the federal government and the private sector and individual states. The first Secretary of Energy, James Schlessinger, suggested that the department’s traditional model of increasing supply to meet demand will need adjustments in order to meet the coming plateau of fossil fuels.

The 2008 Energy Conference was held in the Washington Convention Center. close
