Jeffrey Sachs talked about his book The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time, published by Penguin Press, about how to end poverty around the world by the year 2025. Professor Sachs argued that ending global poverty was a very realistic goal that could be achieved if the U.S. was willing to make it a priority. He criticized the Bush administration for a lack of commitment to poverty issues and argued that free market solutions for economic development would not work. He also laid out a series of suggested questions for the executive directors of the World Bank to ask any nominee for head of the Bank. Professor Sachs answered questions from members of the audience following his remarks. Commentary was provided by Zia Qureshi, senior advisor for global monitoring at the World Bank. close
