Professor Hasan-Askari Rizvi talked about the implications of the parliamentary elections held in Pakistan on February 18, 2008, in which President Pervez Musharraf’s party was defeated. He discussed the possibilities of Pakistan moving toward democratic-civilian rule and stability; power struggle among the political parties; and the political and constitutional conflicts caused by President Musharraf’s decision to remove Supreme Court judges. Other issues that pose challenges included interactions between the weak political forces and the powerful Pakistani military, addressing the growing socio-economic inequities, and coping with religious extremism and terrorism. close
