German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Opposition Leader Angela Merkel held their only televised debate for election to chancellor. Journalists questioned the two candidates on the budget, tax reform, unemployment and foreign policy.

General elections in Germany are September 18, 2005, and most polls show Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s Social Democrats losing to a coalition led by Opposition leader Angela Merkel. If she wins, Ms. Merkel would be the first woman Chancellor in German history, and the first from East Germany.
