Secretary Riley testified on the administration’s request for a $2.75 billion increase in the Education Department budget. He described various education programs which he wants funded and defended administrative costs of the department. He was questioned about education for migrants, school uniforms, the safe and drug-free schools programs and other issues. Other witnesses discussed the role of the Education Department, teachers' unions and other topics.
