Members from the British House of Commons backed a motion to allow the prime minister to call an early election on June 8, 2017, despite some criticism from about a dozen members. The final vote was 522 to 13. The debate and vote came one day after Prime Minister Theresa May made the surprise announcement for the snap election in London, stating that it was the best way forward to ensure a unified front on negotiations for the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, also known as “Brexit.” close
