This is the second part in a four-part series on the legacy of the Warren Court. Justices William O. Douglas, John M. Harlan and Hugo L. Black of the Warren court were discussed, including their legal philosophies, personalities and effects upon the Court. Mr. Dorsen, once a law clerk for Justice Harlan, described the justice’s checking power which aimed to “stall the brave new world that the rest of the court...sought to create.” Mr. Urofsky depicted Justice Douglas as a moralist and visionary, rather than the expected detached intermediary. Mr. Freyer treated Justice Black’s belief in balancing individual rights and the welfare of the community, and his consistent interpretation of the Constitution. close
