Gary Gallagher talked about two questions stemming from Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox in April 1865. First, he analyzed whether Appomattox was the definitive endpoint of the Civil War, thereby marking the beginning of the Reconstruction process. Second, Professor Gallagher looked at the wartime goals of the Union, and if these were in fact achieved.

“The Wars of Reconstruction” was a part of the American Civil War Museum’s 2016 symposium “The Road from Appomattox: Political Violence, Military Conflict, and National Reunion,” a day-long symposium held at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. close
